Question
Five days ago we went to our local pound looking for a dog, and we found it, a beagle pup. He was given his shots and a wormer which took effect that same day, he vomited worms and he got some out by using the bathroom. He is a shy dog but he acts normal. Today and every other day since we have had him, he has had bloody stool that is runny and he seems to have gas alot. He doesnt have worms in it any more just blood clots. His appitite isnt normal but it isnt to the point to where he isnt eating. He has been vomiting also. We asked a vet, and they replied that is was becase of the worms but I think its more than that. I am really worried. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Candie!  Bloody stool and vomiting are signs of an intestinal parasite.  I would definately recommend having him dewormed again...asap.  Intestinal parasites can have traumatic consequences if not treated properly.  Did the pound give him the shots and wormer?  His stool should be taken into a veterinarian for a fecal test.  There are so many different types of worms and different medications to treat each type.  Now, if he was vomiting worms, and they almost looked like noodles, that's round worms. So he was given a dewormer that killed round worms. Bloody stool is usually a sign of an intestinal parasite called coccidia.  That needs a completely different medication.  I would definately take him to your veterinarian for a check up as soon as possible.  This pup should have been dewormed way sooner...which is, of course, not your fault, but the pounds, and therefore, he may need more aggressive deworming treatment.  If you don't have a veterinarian yet, look through the yellow pages to find a veterinarian in your area, or ask friends and family who they would recommend in your area.  I can completely understand why you would be concerned.  As long as you get him to a veterinarian as soon as possible, he should be just fine.  He just needs the proper medication to get rid of all these worms!
I hope this helps and please keep me posted as to how he is doing!
Congrats on your new baby!
