Impacted Glands?

Question
Hi. My 12-year old neutered male cat seems to have reddened area around his anus, near the glands. Usually, I see some obstruction there, but it is clear now, only red.

About 16 months ago, he was diagnosed with a low-grade cutaneous/subcutaneous hemangiosarcoma on his toe. He had great care and is fine now after having had a toe amputation.

But because he has had the hemangiosarcoma (though with very few symptoms), I get a little worried when I see anything wrong with him.

What do you suppose could be wrong with him (e.g. infection)? Should I try something at home and see if it abates or should I take him in to the vet immediately?

Thank you.

Answer
It may be irritation from licking or straining to go to the bathroom or his anal glands.  You can try to apply Desitin to the area.  However, with his history of cancer, I would recommend a physical examination and have your vet do a rectal exam to check for any potential tumors as well as express the anal glands.
