Question
Hei, Still remember me?  My Puppy is getting worse n worse each day. Her pad is dry and the skin frm the pad is coming out now. Since yesterday she suffer frm difficulty in breathing. She was moaning or i should say she is crying non stop. Her situation right now is worse than last time. This is the fifth week since she had sick.
Right now she is with the vet for treatment. The vet said that she had developed pneumonia. In fact very badly.. Yesterday i suggested to bring her home at night cos the vet is leaving her alone in th clinic after his duty. Me sent her every morning to the vet for treament  then i will bring her back at night to keep an eye on her. Before that i din know that my puppy is alone at night. when i knew that ,i was indeed very angry. Cos my puppy situation mostly got bad during night period because of the cold weather, so all the while i used to give her a good massage on her chest and back using vicks before she slept. She was alright except losing her appetite. Every 4 hour i woke up to feed her water and clear her discharge to make sure she is not dehydrated . Im working so hard to make her recover.  Just because one night im not by her side her situation become worse. The vet said he will try his best. Im crying when i see her suffering. I dont wanna put her to sleep, i can feel her putting a lot of efford to figh against the virus. Her leg is weak, but still she run to me when i fetch her in the clinic. Every day the vet put her on drip for a while then she will starts eating but not much. The vet said dont force feeding her cos her mouth is already injured( she struggle when we try to insert the pill into her throat) What should i do so that she can breath easily like what she did last time.I dont think her body is absorbing the nutrien n the antibotic that the vet gave her. Her tongue is pale, she doesn't has enough blood. I din sleep yesterday night cos she is crying in pain. I let her laid down on my  tigh and one hand supporting her head up so that she can get more air. Im really helpless now. I cant put her to sleep cos i love her so... much. I dont want her to leave me. But she is suffering now, my heart is hurt. Am i too selfish. I dont want her to leave me so i had her suffering.  Any chances for her to recover. She still doesn't has any sign of seizures yet. But my heart tell me it is going to develop very soon. She had no vomitting and dhirrear. Her shit is still nice n solid. I think she cant eat because of her throat ache. There is nothing to do with the breaking of GI track. Am i right?
Please help me n make me stop crying.
How does pneumonia kill a puppy? Is it same like human? I really don't know.

Answer
Patrice! Of course I remember you!  Oh my, you've been through it all, haven't you?  You and your poor baby girl!
Okay, pneumonia is a common development throughout this illness, and alot of the times the animal may become worse before getting better.  Did your veterinarian put her on Lasix?  If not, that's what she needs.  Lasix is an oral medication that is used to dry up fluid in the lungs.  This way, you will be able to get a hold of the pneumonia and the antibiotics will be able to work.  The serious thing with pneumonia is the fluid in the lungs...and the Lasix will take that away.  If your veterinarian won't put her on it, take her somewhere else..as Lasix is DEFINATELY a must.
She should be on an IV drip consistently.  You might want to talk to your veterinarian about letting you take her home for the night with the IV and drip...the IV fluids are what is going to assist the antibiotics in flushing this out of her system.  That is excellent that she is eating a little.  Normally puppies with pneumonia won't eat at all...so that's good!  Talk to your veterinarian about Nutri-Cal, which is a gooey substance in a tube that your dog can lick, which will give her the calories and vitamins she needs.  You may also want to talk to your veterinarian about changing the antibiotic.  Perhaps she's been on this one too long and it's effects are wearing off.  It is possible to develop an immunity to an antibiotic.  The antibiotic Baytril would be a great one to switch to.  Because her tongue is pale, this indicates that her platlets are down.  Your veterinarian should give her some Hetostarch.  After neutering my kitten, he crashed, almost died.  His gums were white, he was in liver failure and his platlets were so dangerously low.  One day on Hetostarch and...well, let's just say, we just celebrated his first birthday and he's a healthy big boy!  I would definately assume it would have the same effects on your baby and her platlet levels.  Don't feel hopeless yet.  You obviously have a fighter.  She definately has a huge will to live and to be honest, because of the fact that she made it this far...there is still a great chance that she will make it. With this illness, it has to run it's course and it has some horrible symptoms that are inevitable.  Hang in there.  She is absolutely the luckiest puppy in the world to have such a wonderful "furmom".  Right now, the first thing is to get rid of that fluid in her lungs...Lasix!  Remember that name as it will definately help!
Hang in there!  Please let me know how she does.  My thoughts and prayers are with that little girl and with you!
Sending a billion get well puppy kisses,
Hilary
