Question
I HAVE A 5 MONTH MALE BOXER WITH RED MANGE. I AM TOLD IT CAN ONLY BE PASSED ON BY BREEDING AND NOT FROM DOG TO DOG CONTACT.IS THIS TRUE,HOW TO TREAT,AND IS THERE ANY WAY TO CURE.

Answer
It is not true that it comes from breeding.  Certain breeds are more susceptible because their immune systems are not as strong as they should be. There is some familial association with that. Fortunately, most puppies will outgrow the mange as ther immune systems kick in.  Puppies acquire the mange mites from their mother early in life.

I recommend dipping with amitraz every 2 weeks for a minimum of 6 dippings.  Some puppies will not respond and cure that way, so we often treat dogs on a monthly basis to keep the mange mites under control.  The other treatment is to give daily high doses of Ivermectin by mouth.  It may take months for the mites to go away, if your dog can tolerate these high doses.
