Question
Dear Dr.,  My 12 yearold Bishon has had a lump aspirated and it was foung to be cancerous.  We have been presented three options. One, biopsy an expensine treatment butalso thelocation of the hospital is far away. Two, Surgery, I'm told it can get messy and alot of care involved. Third, just keep him comfortable for as long as possible.  My question is , The first option would work for us but will this really extend his life or just maintaining a comfort levelbe just as good ? Thanks Mary L.

Answer
Certainly at 12 years, he should have a few more good years left unless the tumor is very agressive.  I think you best bet is to visit a veterinary oncologist to get the best answers as far as survival times and prognosis with each treatment.  Thyroid cancer can be curable with surgery, therefore, I would recommend having a specialist remove the tumor.  I am not sure what the expensive treatment you mention...possibly radiation?...therefore, I can not comment on if it would extend his life or what is involved with it.
