Rat Terrier..7 seizures in 9 hours

Question
Last week my 9yr old Rat Terrier was acting strange...she wouldn't get up to go to the bathroom, and just seem to stare into outer-space. Not normal behavior from a crazy little dog. We took her to the vet and she was tested for Lymes. The vet instructed us that she had a very bad case of lymes. He gave her a shot of amoxicillin and a 30 day supply of lyme medication. Later that night starting at 11:30pm, she had the first of seven intense seizures. We called the emergency vet at 4:00am and they stated to bring her in at 7:30am. I guess they don't really care about suffering animals. When she finally saw the vet that morning she had the last seizure. She was given a shot of valium to calm her. She was also started on phenobarb. We were instructed to give her 3-15mg pills a day for two days. Now, 3 days later we have been instructed to give her 2 a day. She is still not coherent, walks in circle, doesn't recognize me, falls down often and just doesn't seem to be getting better (although she hasn't had anymore seizures). She is eating though. I guess I have a few questions, could these seizures be related to the lymes disease? Is this too much Phenobarb? I have read that her "after the seizure symptoms" are common, but how long could they potentially last? My little dog and I would appreciate any advice!

Answer
Yes, Lyme Disease can cause seizures.   She should also have a CBC, Chem Screen, Electrolytes and thyroid level checked if not done already.  The phenobarb dose may be too much or just her body getting used to it.  A blood level is usually tested after being on the medication for a few weeks.  The post-ictal phase may last a few minutes or a few hours.  Because she had so many seizures in such a short time, she may have sufferred some brain damage.  I would highly recommend getting her on an all-natural diet and supplement with as much fresh veggies as she will eat.  You want to avoid putting dyes and preservatives into her system at all costs.  I would also recommend supplementing with a B25 B complex vitamin daily, as well as 100 mg of Vitamin E, 100 mg of Ester C twice a day and a drizzle of Fish Oil to help support her nervous and immune systems.
