Strong Urine Odor

Question
Hi, my 3 year old male cat has a VERY STRONG urine odor.  He only urinates once or twice a day, but when he does, I have to clean his cat box IMMEDIATELY, or the whole house will smell of his urine.  (STRONG ammonia scent).  I tried to get a sample of his urine to take to my vet, but he will not urinate in the box unless there is cat litter in it.  He was fixed over 2 years ago, so I don't understand what is going on.  Is there something I can give him, to get rid of this AWFUL smell?

Thanks,
Cindy

Answer
Try feeding him canned food and placing several more water dishes around the house so he gets more fluids into him to dilute the urine.  I would still have the urine sample checked to rule out any underlying problems.  You can try to put a clear plastic bag over the litter and see if he will urinate on that.
