my 7 year old unspayed boxer has recently started drinking large amounts of water, sometimes vomiting it back up,shes urinating more, including at night, she is not eating as much and is a lot quieter then usual, the vet tested a urine sample but it showed nothing, the blood test showed she has kidney problems and maybe pyometra we have to wait untill monday for an xray and are really worried,do you know what sort of kidney problem this could be?the vet said if she has pyometra its a closed one, would it be safe for her to have an operation if she has bad kidneys?
thankyou

Hello!

By saying that the blood test maybe showed pyometra, do you mean that she had high leukocytes? (infection?) Because on pyometra, usually the leukocytes are very high, and it is almost a sure thing, especially if it is a closed pyometra, the leukocytes would go really high. However I can not tell you what sort of kidney problems she had, without examining her or seeing the blood test results. What levels exactly were high, if you tell me about the tests, maybe I can give you an idea. It may be happening in two different ways: Even the pyometra may be the cause of the kidney problem, the kidneys being affected by the infection. Or she might have the kidney problem anyway, because of her age, etc. The safety of the operation is a question mark, but it would totally depend on what type of kidney problem she has, and how bad the blood test results are. But if it's a closed pyometra, she will definitely need surgery, since pyometra can be a life threatening condition if left untreated. If it is a pyometra it may be seen on an x-ray, but it would probably be easier to diagnose it on ultrasound. Please keep me informed on how it goes.

thankyou for your reply,my vet has now done the x-ray but said it didnt show any signs of pyometra at the moment, she said that there were no kidney or bladder stones either and she felt her lymph nodes and they wernt enlarged, she did another blood test and amber is still showing high levels of calcium, she has seen the large ammounts of water amber is drinking and has put her on hills kd diet food.the trouble is amber wont eat,she hasnt eaten a thing since sunday night,(its now tuesday morning, amber only had a sedative for the x-ray)the vet wants to see her again in 10 days to do another blood and urine test but im worried how long can she go on like this ,she seems quite down as a boxer shes usually quite bouncy and shes also a bit wobbly on her back legs, colud this be where she wont eat,the vet said only to feed her hills so i cant even give her a treat to tempt her what should i do?

Answer
Hi again!

I am glad to hear that she doesn't have pyometra. One thing came to my mind though, on the blood tests, did they check for glucose? An increase on water intake and on urine may be the signs of diabetes.

By the way, she hasn't eaten a thing because she is refusing the new diet, or because she doesn't want to eat at all? I mean, is she still begging food from you, for other foods than the new diet? Either way, you should definitely inform your vet about the situation, not eating for so long may lead to other problems. Please keep me informed on how things go.

Kind Regards
