Question

Growth
I have a two year old short haired standard Dachshund.A growth has developed inside his upper left front leg. He began licking at it so I took him to our local vets. No body was able to give a diagnosis. I was given antibiotics and it seemed to work. The growth disappeared which leads me to believe it was an infection. Unfortunately, after I used up all the antibiotics the growth came back. I spent a lot of time on the net searching for answers as to what it could be and found out their are many kinds of tumors. What makes this one distinct is that it produces a bad odor and nowhere have I found bad odor to be one of the symptoms of a skin growth. In every other respects he is a healthy and happy dog showing no signs of discomfort or loss of appetite. If you have any ideas or good places I could go to get answers it would be much appriciated. Please see attached photo.

Thank you for your time.

Regards,

Peter

Answer
Thanks for the picture! I love pictures when it comes to dermatologic conditions. The lesions may well be as a result of a Staph infection but it may not have been treated for long enough or with an appropriate antibiotic. Can you tell me what antibiotic was used and for how long? If we determine that the infection was treated for an appropriate amount of time then there are other things this could be. It may be a combination Staph and yeast(Malassezia) infection and may need to be treated with an anti-fungal medication like Ketoconazole. Yeast infections tend to give off a distinctive odor AND are very common in dachsunds.

There is one sure way to determine what the cause of the lesions are. Taking a biopsy of the lesions requires quick sedation and small punch skin samples. A pathologist will be able to determine what the cell type of the lesion is. Then your vet will know exactly how to treat it without having to guess.
