dog eye infection

Question
We noticed that one of our dogs has a problem with his eye: it looks like some kind of dermatitis - hair has been falling out around the eye and the skin  looked slightly inflamed.  We have been putting on anti-biotic cream but it does not seem to be helping and now it has spread to the other eye as well. What kind of infection is it? or what can we do to solve the problem

Answer
Without seeing something like this it is hard to say what it is. It could be demodex mange or ringworm starting.

He could have a contact dermatitis from rolling on fresh grass (very common) or a new rug or furniture in the house.

When they get a contact dermatitis it is usually red and inflamed and the hair can fall out from the rubbing. It is usually itchy so the dog rubs more once it starts. They often get it on their feet and their chins from licking their feet.

I think a trip to the vet is in order to find out for sure what it is and get some treatment. An antibiotic cream is probably not the answer but a steroidal one might be.

Let me know what you find out.
