Question
Hi Hilary,I'm an aminal lover too, except for snakes and reptiles and such, but dogs, cats, horses, etc,I hate to see them in cages
and places where people just don't give a dam
how they treat their pets.I have a new neighbor
who has a big puppy,BUT,leave it tied up outside
all day long in this heat,it does get shade, and
is on about a 20 foot lead wire, but twice now,I
had to walk over and give it water. They leave the
water bowl out in the sun,and usually empty,it
hurts me,but I don't want to make waves yet with
the newby's...................................
I'm sorry,I got carried away there for a moment.
Its just that I hate to see people treat their
aminals in that way............................
My question is:If my little dog Spanky, eats one
of those secatas bug,how will this affect him.
He's a house dog[My little baby]but has a dog
door to go out as he pleases,so I can't watch
him all the time.                Thanks Alot!

Answer
Hi Norman!  Spanky should be just fine. I have never heard of secadas being toxic to dogs, then again they only come out every 17 years, so I may just not have heard of it yet.
How long ago did Spanky eat the secada? If it has been more than 12 hours and you are not seeing any vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, increased thirst, I would think Spanky is just fine!
If he stops eating and vomits, you may want to have your veterinarian check him out to be sure there is not any effects from the secada.  I truly don't think you will have a problem.
As for the neighbor dog...that is so sad.  When you feel it necessary, you can call your local animal shelter for information on where to report this.  Dogs are not allowed to be kept outside all day in the heat or cold without a dog house.  Water is not allowed to be sitting in the sun, and must be available at all times.  Since you mentioned this is a puppy, there is a chance that this is a first dog for your neighbor and they're not quite sure how to handle it.  Maybe you can try talking to them or, like I said, call in a complaint.
I hope that this helps and give Spanky some kisses for me!
I don't know how he would want to eat one of those things, but he should be just fine!
Take care and keep me posted!
