Cyst Removal

Question
My 4 year old Doberman Pinscher had surgery 12 days ago to remove a cyst above one of the nipples on his chest. Today we went to the vet to have the stitches removed - the vet said everything looked fine and was healing well. However, when we got home and I was looking at his scar, there seems to be some fluid starting to build up where the cyst was removed. Is this normal or should I take him back to have my vet look at it?

Answer
Stephani,

What you are describing is probably a seroma.  Sometimes after surgery, serum (a pinkish clear fluid) will build up in a space under the skin after a mass removal.  If it is a seroma there is nothing to worry about.  It will resolve on it's own.

BUT....  Occasionally there is another complication such as bleeding or infection, so I recommend having the veterinarian who did the surgery to take a look and see what it is.  It's better to be safe than sorry :-)
