Question
Hi, and thank you for taking the time to help me out as my vet is on vacation.  I read the directions on otomax and it says 4 drops for dogs under 30 pounds.  Nala is a cat of about 12 pounds. What would be the appropriate dosage?  She's had an ear infection that we just can't get rid of and we are awaiting a different medication to be made.  I am also interested in the side-effects of these drops.  They seem to make her loopy.

Thanking you in advance for your help I am,
Sincerely yours,
Wendy

Answer
There really isn't anything in it that would cause her to be loopy but she is probably having a reaction to the gentamicin sulfate. A few cats do have reactions to this drug.
If you want to wait and stop using these you can. One or two days aren't going to make that much difference. Cleaning her ears out with a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol then putting a few drops of olive oil in her ears will work until you get her meds re-made.

I think it's best to back off a drug that makes a cat loopy. I had another questioner that had a cat react to the same drug in an ophthalmic solution, so it isn't the best drug around for cats.

I hope she gets well soon. Please let me know if I can help you further and how she is doing in a few days.
