Question
My 3y/o GSD was treated for heartworm, 2 months ago. She is doing well. How soon after treatment may she be bred?

Answer
I am not sure what a GSD is, (german shorthair dog? german shepard dog?) but no dog should be bred for at least a year after heartworm treatment. It takes months and months for these worms to break down and be absorbed by the body and we are talking the heart too. So any kind of stress can cause this dog to throw an embolism for at least 6 months or more. You must minimize all stresses for this dog at this time.

I am hoping she is now on year-round heartworm prevention also. Some dogs are not so lucky and don't make it through the treatment, so this dog got a second chance at life.

I went through it with a rescue dog once. It's hard I know but worth the wait. My dog was spayed when I got her however.

So give her at least 6 months minimum, or ask your vet.
