Question
Hello,
Our dog seemed fine just yesterday and showed no signs of anything wrong. Last night she was chewing on a lot of sticks from the back yard. Well in the middle of the night the dog started puking a lot and had solid stool with some blood in it. Then as the night went on her stool started getting more runny and with more blood. The last time was mainly blood. Her stool looks kind of dark red and clotty now (I think its stool, and not vomit but not sure as i did not see her do it.) I can see in her vomit parts of sticks, so i think that she may have just eaten some sticks but she also got spade about 2 weeks ago so im kinda worried. I pushed on her stomach to see any signs of pain but she seems to not mind it. She is however not as energetic as usuall. Im keeping an eye out on her for now but if she doesnt start getting better here soon im going to take her to the vet. She has all of her shots.

Answer
Eating sticks can be as dangerous as eating bones. Both have sharp edges and splinters and both can perforate intestinal walls and cause fatal peritonitis.

If this was my dog, I wouldn't wait. I would be calling my vet or any on call vet and have her looked at today. She could very well have an impaction or worse, a perforation.

Dogs can hide the worst symptoms of all so don't wait too long. I would be remiss in not telling you that this could be a very dire emergency.

Please call your vet soon.
