Jaw fracture

Question
My toy poodle was attacked by a pitbull which caused the jaw fracture. The doctor said it was broken in 3 places and he had to place wires and a plate to support his mandible. He said that he's hopeful that his jaw will heal in time so he had to tape his mouth to prevent it from moving. I just would like to know if it will heal because the doctor could not give me a definite answer. Please help...I'm scared that it would not heal. Thanks.

Answer
Well I am not a doctor but I have no idea why it wouldn't heal unless your dog was very old or sick. Most of the broken jaws I have seen have healed up just fine. It does take some time-usually 4- 6 weeks for a complete healing.

Some bones in the jaw (in elderly dogs) are very thin and do have a hard time mending back together, but like I said, that is usually with very old dogs.

If your doctor isn't being very forthcoming you always have the option of seeing another vet.

I am glad your little guy wasn't killed. I am so sorry that he has to suffer however.

I hope that you reported the dog and owner to the authorities.
