Pyoderma (feline acne)

Question
My female cat of 7 years of age has developed a severe case of chin acne. She uses a stainless steel feed bowl or china bowl and shares our household with 11 other cats, none of which is affected. About half are indoor/outdoor and have been "top spotted". She does not go outside.

Biopsy indicated severe pyoderma, acne and blackheads. 2 weeks of clindamycin, 2 weeks of cephalexin and now 1 week of clavomox have yet to fix the problem. At a time when she was particularly bad with running lesions I gave her 1cc of dexamethasone sub q. This had a remarkable result drying up the sores and making her much more comfortable for a couple of days, then the lesions returned. What is the role of steroids in the treatment of this condition?

Answer
Steroids will quell the inflammation and reduce the itchiness, but they do nothing to affect the primary disease.  MAny times in chin acne, there is also a yeast infection and sometinmes there is demodex mange mites in these.  Have your vet look for these 2 other conditions.
