Re-Introducing Mother cat to her kittens

Question
Hi Barb,

I have had 2 maine coon mix kittens now for about 4 weeks,
they were separated from their mother at 8 weeks, and the
mother is still up for adoption. I am adopting the mother at least
on a trial basis this Saturday and at this time I will see whether
she can get along w/ my current pets, 2 of her kittens.

My guess is that the kittens will smell differently then the
mother remembers, since they have been in a new environment
now for 4 weeks.

Do you think the cats will remember each other, or should I take
the same precautions, as I would with any new cat addition?

Thanks,

Jenny

Answer
Hi Jenny!  Normally, the kittens and mother cat will recognize eachother. There, of course, is the chance that they may have a rocky start...just like any other new addition!  It really could go either way, but the majority has it that they should recognize eachother.  I would however, take the same precautions as you would with a new addition.  See first how they initially react to eachother.  They may be fine right off the bat, or they may need some time to adjust.  Either way, they will love eachother in no time!
Congrats on all the new additions!  I am a BIG cat lover!  I actually just rescued one tonight...so I know how you feel about introducing a new cat.  There's some hissing going on here right now...but in a few days they should all be fine.  Hopefully you and I will have peaceful homes very quickly!
Take care and please let me know how it goes!
