We got a Golden Retriever pup 1 wk ago. We discovered that many of the plants in our yard are poisonus to dogs. EG Yew, Holly and English Ivy. Is there any effective method or product to repel pup from these plants? Our Vet was of very little help.
Answer -
Hi Allan!

There are a number of common plants that can cause an upset stomach or even poison dogs.Usually the leaves must be swallowed to cause injury, but in some cases just chewing the leaves can cause problems.

Other plants dangerous to pets include caladium,
spider plant,airplane plant,cyclamen,foxglove,dragon tree,
mistletoe,azalea,poinsettia,rhododendron and
mother-in-law's tongue.

There really aren't any poison repelent but I can make a few suggestions:

1.)Put a big fence around the poisonous plants so your dog can't get them

2.)Stay with your dog while he's in the backyard and keep an eye on him

3.)Keep him out of the yard and just walk with him

4.)Cut and get rid of every single poisonous plant

The sooner poisoning is treated, the better the odds of saving your pet.Since pets can't say where it hurts or what they ate,you need to know what to watch for-and then call your vet immediately.Warning signs include:

~changes in behaviour.

~your pet may shiver or become anxious.

~he may lurch or stagger, have seizures or lose consciousness.

In some cases he may drool and paw at his mouth.

Breathing problems like  panting or gasping.

I hope this ahs been helpful and I wish you the best of luck! Please keep me posted and give that Retriever millions of kisses for me!Sending waggign tails your way!

Thanks Nicole,

I was hoping to find an effective dog repellant, to keep him away from harmful plans and areas. The fence is a good idea, but out of the question due to amount and area of plants. We have been staying with him, but it would be nice to let him romp on his own some of the time.
