Behavior after spay

Question
I just got my kitten spayed on Tuesday. Tuesday and Wednesday she was pretty tired. Thursday she seemed to be awake quite a bit. She did have pain medication for all of those day. Today she had to go without medication. She was up for almost six hours this morning, but since then has slept all day. The medication was given to her once a day at 4 pm. So I figure by 4 today, she should not be feeling the medication any more. The incision area looks like it is healing very well. Is this something normal? Maybe from being in a little bit of pain? How long should I expect her to be extra tired?

Answer
It is not unusual for them to be a bit tired after surgery but by 24 hours this should have dissipated. However, cats with weaker immune systems, or very thin, young cats, sometimes have a harder time clearing out the anesthetic.

You should call your vet tomorrow if she is still lethargic and tell them. She might even need some fluids to get past this. If she is still tired on Monday you need to take her in for some blood work, especially a leukemia test, unless they already did one of those.

So call them tomorrow and tell them how she is recovering. They want to know these things.
