Question
Our puppie vomits on and off over the past couple of weeks.  Today...after he vomitted last night...won't eat.  He's playing with cats, his toys..etc...but it's not like him to NOT eat..even after he has gotten sick.

Answer
Hi Susan!  I would definaty recommend a vet visit, as anytime a pet won't eat, it's because they don't feel well.  This may be due to an intestinal parasite, so having your veterinarian deworm him would be a good idea.  Have you changed foods recently?  Given any new treats?  Sometimes foods just don't agree with our pets.  I know that my Shih Tzu absolutely can't eat Science Diet brand.  I have always fed my dogs Science Diet, but his stomach just can't handle it for some reason.  I changed his food to Solid Gold brand dog food, and he hasn't vomited since. Often times we see this with dogs and certain brands.  Do you have a digital thermometer?  You would have to take his temperature rectally, and can use a water based lubricant to make it a little more comfortable for the little guy!  A dog's normal temperature would be 101.5-102.5.  100.5 can also be considered normal, but anything below this would be a sign of a problem.  Anything over 102.5 would signify a fever, which would mean infection.  If his temperature is okay, and if he's playing, I would think he wouldn't have a fever, I would probably assume this is just a stomach upset.  You can try feeding him some boiled chicken (boneless/skinless/spiceless) and rice.  This is very, very easy for the stomach to digest because it's so bland and will give his tummy a rest if this is a stomach upset.  Feed him this for 2-3 days and on the 3-4th day incorporate a bit of dog food in with it.  I would recommend trying a different brand because this may be caused by his food. Each day incorporate a bit of the dog food in with the chicken mix until by the 7th day, he will be completely on the dog food.  In the meantime, sending in a stool sample to your veterinarian would be a good idea, just to be safe there are no intestinal parasites.  The boiled chicken mix also stimulates appetite.
If he still refuses to eat, a vet visit is a must.
I hope this helps and please keep me posted as to how that little guy is doing!
