Question
QUESTION: I have a two month old Pit-bull Puppy. I just bought her Saturday, December 26, 2009. She has no vaccinations whatsoever, we took her to the park the next day (Sunday, December 27, 2009). We get home at 2 P.M. and she threw up twice. We took her to get her vaccinations on Monday but they didn't vaccinate her because she has been throwing up and the nurse suggested to wait until the puppy doesn't throw up. Tuesday went great, no throw up. Today Wednesday she throws up again. I'm really worried i don't know what is causing her to throw up. I'm feeding her Puppy Chow 2-3 times a day with a lot of water. She always eats and drinks like their is no tomorrow. Can you please give me your best advice on what's going on with my puppy.

ANSWER: First of all, I am definitely NOT a Puppy Chow fan and would not recommend it to anyone.  If you read the ingredient list and research them I think you will understand why.

I am pleased that you have a vet that is intelligent enough to not vaccinate your puppy while she is sick (many would have and it is totally against recommended vaccine protocol). Did they check her for worms while she was there? Certain worms can cause vomiting.

How fast does she eat and how much at one time? Try feeding her a natural, top quality food like Hunchen Flocken by Solid Gold or another by-product, preservative free natural food. Soak it for a while first so that it expands prior to her eating it. If she tends to gobble her food rapidly as is often the case with newly out of the litter puppies, especially if they were not the dominant pup in the litter, she could be vomiting due to eating too much too fast and the food expanding in her stomach. Also try feeding her smaller amounts more frequently.

If you feed her any type of dry food, I would seriously recommend adding a quality enzyme, prebiotic and pro-biotic supplement to the food. This is something that you should do for the rest of her life to keep her healthy. If you can give her at least a portion of a balanced raw food diet, I would highly recommend it also.

I would also recommend that you research information on vaccinations before you put her through the series of shots.

QUESTION: Ms. Susan R Griffin,

Thanks for your response, it helps me a lot. This is my first time having a dog, and my family and I are new with dog food brands. I took my 3 month old puppy to the vet on Thursday, December 31, 2009. The vet examined my dog and the parvo test results were positive. The vet said Parvo disease was making my dog throw up. But my dog isn't always throwing up. Out of the whole week, she just threw up twice. The vet sold me take home medicine; i have to inject Serum twice a day, give her liquid medicine in her mouth which are Metoclopramide, and Metronidazole. I am wondering if this medicine will make my puppy strong and healthy and not have parvo disease. My parents payed a lot of money to get the take home medicine. My puppy is very active, she doesn't look sick. Sometimes she looks sad and just sleeps or relaxes.
I said before that she eats her food really fast. She now takes her time and I'm glad she doesn't eat so desperately. I am really thankful you advice to change the food we feed my dog. I will certainly do and i hope results are okay with the change of foods. Thanks a lot Ms. Susan R Griffin for your time and your responses!

Answer
I have been ill myself for a few days and got behind on my computer work. I am glad that you got her to the vet. How is she doing now? If I were you, I would call Dr Gerald Wessner at 352-245-2025 and see about homeopathic treatment for parvo and about using Nosodes for prevention.
He is outstanding and well worth talking to.
