filtration for 30 gallon saltwater tank

Question
I have a 30 gallon saltwater tank. I have a Fluval 204 with carbor and Bio-max in the media baskets. I have a Bio-wheel 150 back filter and another back filter that is a skimmer and a filter. I believe its called a skilter 440 or something like that. My question is this enough filtration to keep my fish healthy? I have a small puffer species and a couple of damsels, two percula clowns and a tang. All fish are doing well but I am being told that my fluval is not good enough and i should invest in a reef system? My tank has been up for 7 months now. I change my carbon in my canister filter monthly. the instructions state to change the biomax after six months but only one half at a time. I do not have any invertabrates in my tank and i would like to have some but not sure if my filters are going to be sufficient. Please let me know what you think.

Answer

Shawn,

I would not invest in a reef system filter unit.  Your water parameters sound good. NH3 and nitrites are almost 0 I hope.  If so that is great.

You have six fish in your tank.  In my opinion that is just right. I would not add any more.  Crabs and star fish are good inverts they eat the deteris in the tank which is good.

I would add a powerhead for water movement. Plus you can add a sponge and carbon to it for more filtration (if you want) The powerhead is about 15.00 plus 6.00 for the attachment.

Good luck
Todd
