Breeding Mollies

Question
QUESTION: In response to your last answer...I do believe I will stay with the mollies then. I found a place that will take the fish and adopt them out so that they will have better homes LOL. I like the mollies better anyways, more colorful and I want to be able to successfully breed them. Now that I have only 2 male mollies in my tank...when do you recommend getting more?

ANSWER: Hi again. I am glad to hear that you found a new home for some of your fish. You should wait until your tank's water quality is better. You will want to wait until your ammonia is at zero and stays that way for a good month before adding any new fish to your tank. Remember When you finally are ready to add in a few females that you should always have more females than males. A ratio of two females for every male will keep the males from harassing one female because he constantly wants to breed(typical male!)

QUESTION: I currently have the 2 male mollies, the 3 newborns from the female that died, and the pleco. I am afraid that the babies will be eaten by the two males as the babies are not hiding very well. If the newborns survive, and if I get more females, how many females do you recommend that I get since I have 2 male mollies. And if I am going to breed them, do I have to get mollies of the same species..like Balloons or Dalmatians, Silvers, Creamsicles or Blacks?

ANSWER: Hi Lisa. You should have two female mollies for every male molly. You can mix the different colors when breeding but you don't want to mix the balloons with the regular due to the balloon body mollies being somewhat of a genetic defect.

QUESTION: Ok. So I should get two female balloon mollies and then two regular female mollies, no matter the color?

Answer
Hi there. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I had to leave for work this morning. As long as you have 1 male regular molly and 1 male balloon body that sounds like a plan. You may have some trouble with them cross breeding but hey, you never know what you will get whenever you are breeding fish!
