Question
do i have to have a bubbler in my 55 gallon fish tank if i have a filter

Answer
Hello michael,

I am not sure what you mean by 'bubbler'.  So you mean bubbling air, like they have in fresh water aquariums?  If so, then NO, it is not reccomended to use bubbling air.

But, you should have some surface 'action'/disturbance.  some trickling water, or some 'splashing' water.  This will bring in air, and keep stuff from accumulating on the surface, like dust and other light particulate matter.

If you have a 'cannister filter', they usually have a spray bar that sprays the water onto the surface of the water as it returns to the tank.

If you use a cannister filter, they usually have 'bio balls' or ceramic beads.  It is not reccomend to use those either.

If the filter has sponges/mechanical filtration, then it is reccomended to eitehr not use them, or to clean them every two weeks..

Trickle filter or sump or wet/dry filtration is more common, with a sump/refugium being the best choice.

Good luck, and let me know how things work out for you.
