Question

Malu shrunk and going
Hi Bill,
I have had my tank up and running for about 6mths now but it was moved and before that it was running for a few years, it is a 150 gallon (uk gallons) and i have live rock, many corals and 2 anemones - a rose BTA and a what i think is a malu. I have several fish - yellow tank - meduim, sailfin - large, regal tank - medium, 3 percs and 1 true perc, emperor cardinal, rock skipper, humbug, fire, damsels and few others along with a good clean up crew of crabs, different snails - turbo and orange marble, and shrimp - dancing, cleaner and pepermint. banded urchin and long spined urchin. Now then.....my three percs (not true percs) took to my rose BTA great - although it was the true percs he got bullied and has been in hiding for about 2 weeks now only coming out if i put a net in the tank to keep the others away whilst he feeds. I purchased a large malu anemone to put the other side of the tank for the true perc hoping he would liven up a little and to get him out of hiding - this worked great for the first 2 nights and the other clowns didn't bother with him, now though, my emperor cardinal has taken over the malu and is guarding it (is this at all normal? i thought it would get stung) and my clown keeps swiming though the spines of the long spined urchin and wont leave it alone, since the cardinal started to guard the malu it has began to make its way under the rock it has been on - i know you should let anemones find their spot but is there a way to keep him out in the open and not under rocks as he is a large and very nice looking anemone, and should/how can i get the cardinal to leave it alone and the perc to go back to that instead of the urchin spines. (i have attached an image if you could confirm my thought on the anemone being a malu)
Many thanks.

Answer
Hello,

I can not confirm the anemone is a MALU variety.. it is in the COndilactus family, but there are MANY different varieties to choose from...

Condilytus variety usualy arent hosted by clowns... maybe the tank raise buggers will go to it, but usually wild caught wont...

There is a reason for this...

Condylactus is usually aggressive, even towards clowns, (which btw are in teh DAMSEL FAMILY  :)  )

The condi may become a nuiscance if it moves around...

And since clowns are in the damsel family, it is not impossible for a damsel to want to try to host... although i am not sure it willactualy host it, and squirm around in it... maybe just guard it...

Damsels especially the larger ones are usually very agressive/bossy... they try to dominate everything, especially other damsels and clowns...

Most folks regret getting that fish... and they usually end up in the sump... to live a life of freedom and solitude... (sounds bad, huh)

As for figuring out where the condi will end up, yo umight want to consider relocating the damsel...

as for solving territorial disputes inside the tank, sometime a good aquascaping will make everyone scramble for a new home when they realize thier old home is gone...(rearranged)

anyways, good luck,,
