flip-flopping fish

Question
Yesterday, Catherine accidently dropped one of our three fish on the floor as
she changed the fish from a dirty bowl to a clean bowl. Soon after, the fish
began wildly flip-flopping around the fishbowl.  He rests a bit, upright, but
soon goes back to the flip-flopping that is so stressful to watch.  Do you
think that the fish injured a fin in the fall to the floor and that he can't
properly swim anymore with the compromised fin situation?  What should we
do?  Should we separate the injured fish from the two normal-swimmers?
Could the fin heal or regenerate?

Answer
Hi Sandy,
If the fish is unable to maintain it's balance then this can be a sign of swimbladder disease. From what you have said the fish that was dropped on the floor would have probably damaged it's swimbladder. You can try feeding him frozen peas as this may help his digestion. Water quality must be very good for the fish to recover. Do daily water changes as this may help him recover more quickly.

Good luck!
Chloe.
