Question
I just set up my first freshwater fish tank this past wknd. At first everything was perfect, now a few days later the water is getting progressivley cloudier. Why is this happening and how do I fix it? Is it going to kill my fish?

Answer
Hello,

Cloudy water can be a sign of bad things in your tank water. More often then not it is a sign of bad bacteria, but you should check the levels of nitrites and ammonia, just to be sure that is not the problem.

You should begin by changing 15% of your water and syphoning your gravel. Also reduce the amount you are feeding your fish to help prevent waste build up. You should then add Waste Control and Cycle, or a similar combination of products. You may also want to add a small amount of a general antibacterial. I recommend Melafix, because it is natural and won't affect your filter system.

When your water is cloudy, sometimes changing water too frequently can make it worse. You should change no more then about 10% every three days. It should start clearing up in the next week or so if you follow all these steps. If it gets worse, then you may need to drain your tank and start with fresh water and follow these steps from the start. This option should be avoided if it can be.

I hope this helps.

Stephanie
