i have set up my freshwater tank. it has been set up for a couple of weeks. i have placed a log insidde the tank but there is a white furr forming on the log.  dont have any fish in it at the moment. is the furr dangerous and how can i get rid of it. thanks

Answer
Hi Kelly
Usually when you see white, furry, algae looking stuff like that, it's a mold.  And usually it's from food that's rotted in the tank.  So, are you currently cycling the tank, and are you using fish food to do that?  Or, my next thought would be did you get the log from outside(in the wild lol)?  If so, there was probably something on there-even a mold or fungus, and that's what you're most likely seeing.  I can't honestly say for sure if it's harmless or not, but you're best bet would be to remove it, and boil it in some water for a good 15-30 minutes to kill off anything on it.  Then let it dry thoroughly outside in the sun.  Do a partial water change too.

Hope that helps!  Let me know if you have more questions!
