fish out of water

We just found out catfish on the floor next to his tank - he tends to jump and hit the top.  We do not know how long he has been out . my son is holding him in the tank lightly squeezing him sorta like CPR - Is there any hope?  the fish's eye is moving, and he moves every once in a while. it is 10:30 am CDT

my guess is that he will not survive.  I think he has been out too long and is dryed out too much. The most humane thing for him is to be put "to sleep"  To do this get a glass full of ice and put water in it.  Then put the fish in the ice water and the whole thing in the freezer for 1/2 hour.  then flush him.  The dramatic change in tempurature will cause him to die.  This is quick and painless for him.
