Question
Overnight our tropical fish tank has grown some clear slime all over the plant decorations. It seems that its mainly growing near the top of the water.. any ideas??

Answer
Hi Trisan,
Sounds this could be a bacteria of some kind. This can be common if there has been a lot of food leftover in the tank that has allowed a type of bacteria to take a hold and spread. The best thing you could do is net and/or siphon it out as much as you can, whilst also doing at least a 50% water change plus gravel vacuuming. Make sure to rinse the filter also (in a bucket of tank water only).
Slime of any sort is usually just a type of bacteria or even sometimes just fish slime shed off by your fish, which actually is not normal but may be due to a water pollution problem irritating their skin and causing them to produce extra slime. This brings us back to water changes, which are the best solution in either case. Try doing 50% water changes for a couple of days and see how it goes.

Usually water changes are the best and easiest cure for fish and tank problems alike. If you need anymore help, let me know!
Best of luck,
Karen~
