Algae Growth Control

Question
I have a 20 gallon freshwater fish tank. I have 2 small algae eaters, and one large algae eater that I recieved for certian reasons from a friend who could no longer care for it. I also have a moderate sized fish. Having 3 algae easters, and one fish, I am nervous that the algae growth is not large enough to reach the algae eaters requirements. Being 3 of them, I am asking for any helpful comments, concerns, Ideas that might help my situation out. I am not a expert by any means, so I thought it would be alright to feed the normal fish twice a day and leave the aquarium light on for one whole day, then off for the night. I would like to know any ways to increase or maintain the algae growth in the tank. It on the opposite side of the room from the window, and I believe it doesn't recieve much, if any, light from the window. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Adam
What kind of algae eaters are we talking about?

Most algae eaters I can think of, will clear up algae in a tank within a day or so.  I purposely let one of my larger tanks go filled up with algae, so in the fall/winter time when I bring my large pleco in from the pond, he has some algae.  He polished off the first day he was in there last year....Just to give you an idea there :)

Honestly, depending on what type they are, you might need to consider getting rid of most of them.  But definitely substitute  their feeding with some zucchini, squash, cucumber, spinach leaves, romain lettuce, algae wafers, shrimp pellets, etc.  Most algae eaters feed at night, so it's best to put the food for them in after lights are out, plus that helps so the other fish don't get all the food.  You usually need to substitute any algae eater with those anyway, just with 3 of them you'll definitely want to.  They make special clips with suction cups, you can stick them on the side of the glass with the food.  Or anchor it down on the bottom under a rock or decoration.

I would only recommend feeding the other fish once a day.  Overfeeding leads to poor water quality, from uneaten food, and it increases their waste output.
Let me know what kind of algae eaters those are though.
