Platy deaths

Question
Hi, I wondered if you could help me with my unexplained platy deaths in my tank. Ive had my tank about a year with no problems apart from about a month ago one of my fish died from a fungus, I went to the local aquarium centre and they told me to use Protozin, which I did and it seemed to clear everything up. They also told me to get some more female platy as I had too many males. I waited approx 2 weeks after I had treated the tank for fungus and bought 4 female platy. All was ok for about a week then all the new platy died followed by about 6 of my original platy. I have neons and corydoras also in the tank and there has been no problem with them, I also have about 7 baby platy and they are fine. I havent done anything different to my tank for the year I had it and all the platy seem to feed well then I find them dead in the morning and im at a loss as to why?! There are no marks on any of them. The only thing ive noticed recentley is the platy do go down to the bottom a lot. Any advice would be really appreciated. Many Thanks. Emma

Answer
Hi Emma,
That is strange. As always, its best if you could test your water and make sure all the levels are in the appropriate ranges.
(Ammonia-0 Nitrite-0 Nitrate-20 or less)

However, unfortunately platies tend to be short-lived as well. Living for sometimes only a couple of years or sometimes even shockingly less. Sometimes too much inbreeding causes this.

Sometimes you just get bad batches of fish too. Some that are too weak or can't handle too much more stress.

The important thing is to make sure the water quality is in good condition.

Best wishes and I hope this helps!
Karen~
