Question
I bought three Balloon Mollies about a 10 days ago. Two of them (male and female) developed some fin problem. I thought it was fin rot so I bought salt and meds. The male improved dramatically but the female died this morning. When I was reaching with the net inside the tank to take her out, I noticed a little fish darting around the tank. It's a bit bigger than the tip of a pen, but not by much. I immediately freaked out I scooped it up and put it a glass jam jar. (no jam in it) I then later found another one sitting on top of the bubbler thing. It looked like he was eating the algae but I'm not sure. I put him in the jar too. I was thinking that maybe my now dead female gave birth before she died, but that seems odd. my other female showed no signs of pregnancy. So I'm really confused. But what freaks me out the most is that both the frogs in the tank (male and female) are really fat. Would frogs eat the fry? Do you think my now dead female had the fry? What do I feed the fry? Should I keep them in the jam jar until they are bigger? If I do keep them in the jar,how do I keep the water warm? Help me, I am so confused!

Answer
Go to your pet store and pick up a floating breeder trap. They are about $5.

They float in the main tank, but they are usually mesh or plastic. Sealed so that big fish can't get in and small fish can't get out.

The mollies would have had between 30-150 babies. All fish will eat them, frogs included.

You can feed them very, very, very finely crushed flakes, freeze-dried and baby brine shrimp, or special livebearer fry food.

Get them out of the jam jar and get the breeder trap as soon as possible. They will not survive long in there. Until you do get the trap, I would float the jar in the main tank to keep the water temperature equalized. It should not go under 75F for them, and they prefer it around 80F.
