Question
Hi, i noticed that in my tank, my 2 silver dollars, 3 out of 5 corys and 1 ram has a gold dust coating, though it isnt so obvious on the ram...at first thought, i suspected that it was velvet and monitered their behaviour closely as i did not have a velvet med then, but now after 2 days, im begining to wonder if it is velvet as the fishes that have the gold dust coating are eating well, active and are not flicking or rubbing against objects, the only symptom they have that match with velvet is the gold dust coating...what should i do?

ammonia:0ppm
nitrite:0ppm
nitrate:10ppm

Answer
Hi Jun
Saw your question in our question pool.

I have a good link with some photos of velvet:

http://www.flippersandfins.net/Velvet.htm

And they mention on there as well, get a flashlight, turn off the lights, and shine it on the fish.

Some fish do have a "goldish" tone to them, I have a Bolivian ram and some cory cats that  I had to do that test on as well.  Compare what you're seeing to those photos.  There's some meds listed on there as well, most ich meds should work.  But be careful using a lot of those meds with the silver dollars and the cory cats-they can be sensitive to the medications.  Buy one that says it treats velvet, but also has a recommended dosage for tetras or scaleless fish and follow the directions carefully.

Good luck!
