Guppy Mother

Question
Hello Karen,

I recently purchased a pregnant guppy from a local aquarium store.  I noticed that from the moment that she was brought in to my community tank, she seemed to shy away from other fish, hang out in the surface, and refuse to eat.  I understand these behaviors are consistent with pregnant guppies.  I put her in a breeder tank within the community tank for 3 days and she gave birth to about 20 fry.  I though that after she gave birth, she would begin to eat. However, even though she does not act as shy as before, she is still not eating, and I am concerned about her well being. I have not seen her eat once since I brought her to the tank about 10 days ago.  What could be the cause of this?  Thank you for you help!  Miguel

Answer
Hi Miguel,
Many female guppies will behave "off" when they have recently given birth to babies. It may take her some time to get back into the normal behavior of guppies. Its also possible she might be sick but I wouldn't advise any kind of treatment unless you see obvious symptoms. I'd make sure her water is as fresh and clean as possible and nitrates are kept low.

She could be intimidated by other fish and choose to refrain from them. If you have very boisterous males (very common) or any other fish that chase her that could be a big part of it. If you don't already, try to have a lot of floating plants and plants grouped throughout the tank to help her feel more secure.

If she displays natural foraging behaviors (picking at objects) she is probably OK but I cannot guarantee anything.

Best of luck and I hope this helps!
Karen~
