Freshwater Cichlids

Question
I have 7 cichlids that I got from my sister. She says they are hybrids but I am not certain as to which they really are. I have a 46 gallon tank and I was wondering what other fish I could put with them as it's freshwater. Everything I search on the internet talks about African cichlids which get huge and I am told mine will not get that big.
My husband wants shrimp in the tank, I was thinking of snails and crab... maybe even some clams. What are your recommendations?

Thanks for your time.

Answer
Cichlids vary in size depending on where they originated. I have a 75 with African Cichlids and they largest will get to be about 6 inches where as some south American will get up to 10 inches. Most often hybrids tend to more of the African type. Shrimp will be a snack along with clams. I have about 4 snails in my tank currently and they have done decently in regards to being left alone. A crab will most likely also be picked at to the point of killing it. Africans are aggressive for the most part. I have found few that are not as I personally really enjoy this specie of fish. Best of luck and happy fish keeping.
