Question
I just recent got a 29gal aquarium from a friend, it had dead minnows in it. what is the best way to clean this tank of smell and water stains and still be able to use it with fish again. I have heard the best cleaner is vinegar, is this true? Your answer to my cave question the other day was most helpful, thank you very much.

Answer
Hi Marcus;

You are quite welcome!

Vinegar is fine to use, but personally I prefer household bleach. It definately kills bacteria and funguses. Fill the tank up and add 1/4 cup of bleach. Let it soak for an hour or so and then drain and rinse, rinse, rinse. If you don't like the idea of bleach, use the vinegar instead. It takes a lot more, but it is less harmful to your clothes and other items. (I would use a quart of white vinegar in a 29 gallon) I use vinegar full strength on mineral deposits on glass tanks and scrape them with a single edge razor blade. Soak clean paper towels with the vinegar and lay them on the mineral stains to soak for a few minutes. Works on the lids too.

If you use a razor blade to scrape anything, be careful not to cut yourself or cut into the sealant. If the tank is plastic, don't use a blade on it. It will permanently scratch!

Followups welcome
