QuestionI have lost all my goldfish to ick even after treating them. It just kept coming back. I aquired this fish tank from my daughter who never cleaned the tank in 5 years. I want to start all over and clean everything and know nothing about fish tanks. please help me.
AnswerThe best way to clean an aquarium is to use hot water and a clean sponge. Most things come out will just a little scrubbing. If there is algae on the glass, it should come off if it has been left to dry. If there is hard water or lime stains, use a razor blade carefully on the inside. Goldfish are generally lost to illness because they are treated for symptoms, but the problem causing the illness is never addressed. Goldfish need a min of 20g per fish.
When you get your tank set up, it should be cycled. It's a process that helps beneficial bacteria build up in your tank to handle fish waste. Here is a good page on the cycling process.
