Betta Fish has a sore

Question
Help!
My betta fish, George, (who I've had for a year now) looks to have some sort of wound just below his mouth. It looks a bit like a blister when the top skin comes off, red underneath. He doesn't have any sharp objects in his vase. It's a decent size vase, hold about 2L, that had come with one of those plants in it, which I took out. He really hasn't eaten the past few days that I've noticed, and seems more listless than usual. I just changed his water, I noticed that the top looked a little oily, I use spring water. I've just learned about the temperature needed for bettas (I think its probably a bit cold, hence some of his lethargy) but the sore concerns me.

Answer
Hi Anne-Marie;

It would help him recover if he was warmer. He may have succumbed to a bacterial infection from weakness after being cold. Get it up to 80 or 82 and get some Betta Fix or Melafix. They are natural products that help heal tissue without the same irritations and harmful side-effects that traditional medicines can.

He is getting old and his immune system will not be as strong now. Bettas live about 2 to 3 years. Some live to be up to 5, but it is pretty rare. When we buy them they are about a year old so yours is about 2 now. So you've done a great job taking care of him. Keep the water clean and warm and hopefully he will be able to recover on his own.

Followups welcome
