beta is bloated/popped eye/slow/bent

Question
My daughter's beta that she has had for 6mos. has been ill for awhile, but I didn't relize it, its in her room and she takes care of it.  Today I looked at it and was shocked.  It's fins are slightly tattered, some are a little darkened, but the real problem is that the poor thing is so bloated that it is actually in an S shape and bent and recently, his eye has developed a bubble over it as well.  We bought a new 5 gallon tank with a filtration system and put in Tetracycline 125mg by  Aquaticure.  As I am typing this, my older daughter is out to buy a heater and therm. to bring his water temp. up.  Is there anything else I can do to rescue my daughter's fish?  Should I use the Maracyn or Kanacyn instead? Can I double the meds since it is in such bad shape? Thank you so much.  I feel so bad for the little fish.

Answer
Hi Pam;

Poor little fella. Let's see what we can do.....

Use Kanacyn to help clear his infections. It absorbs inside the fish to get where infection is. A double dose of antibiotics can cause organ failure, so avoid that. Also use Melafix to help heal the damaged tissues. Get the temperature up slowly to 82 degrees. Heat will speed up his metabolism and boost his immunity and hopefully he will be on the road to recovery.

Hope he feels better soon....
