We have a 3 gallon Eclapse...

Question
We have a 3 gallon Eclapse fish tank with two goldfish and an algae eater.  The first two goldfish died after almost 2 years.  We replaced them with two more.  Since then the water becomes murky and we can't seem to keep it clear and clean.  Never had this problem before. The tank always stayed clear and clean.  We have removed all rocks and plants and replaced with new ones.  Any idea what is happening?  Thanks
Sandy

Answer
Hi Sandy;

I think you were very lucky to have had the first ones for so long in such a tiny tank. Goldfish need much more room. They are deep-bodied messy guys that get very big (6 to 8 inches) and need 10 to 20 gallons each with good filtration to thrive as they get bigger. They have a lifespan of 10 or more years when given proper space. Even just one goldfish without the algae eater for the little tank is just too much I'm afraid. For now, make 25% water changes three times a week. Don't overfeed and the tank won't be quite so dirty.

The best fish for such a small tank is a male betta. They are very pretty and are physically equipped to live in small tanks. You could also have a little catfish in with him. Watch the algae eater to be sure he doesn't pick on the betta though. It it's a chinese algae eater they can get pretty nasty. Especially in small tanks.
