Goldfish Tank Question

Question
I have a 55 gallon tank with one goldfish in it.  I had 4 others but they have all died, Im guessing of old age. The one fish that is in there was just an ordinary feeder fish from the pet store. I have had him for about 6 years and now that he is my only fish, a 55 gallon tank seems too big and I am tired of cleaning it. He has lived by himself in this tank for about a year or so. My question is, do you think he would survive a move to a smaller tank like a 10 gallon? I know how to start the tank and all that but I was just wondering if you think it would be mean to move him to a smaller tank and if he would have a chance of surviving.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Jenny;

I think a 10 gallon might be too cramped for him. He wouldn't be able to get the exercise he is used to and stay healthy in such a small tank. It would also require cleaning more often than the 55 gallon. Less water means a higher concentration of wastes. A 20 gallon with a good power filter would probably be okay though. Use the gravel and decorations from the old tank and hopefully the break-in period won't be as severe as it would be normally. Goldfish live for 10 or more years so he has a few years still ahead of him. A big enough tank will help him do that. Just replace 25% of his water and vaccum the gravel weekly and he should live a long and healthy life.
