Sick Beta??? (forgotten info)

Oh yeah and my red beta fish is also flaring out his gills - he resembles a blow fish kind of in the face.  He keeps blowing his gills in and out really hard.

I think my first answer is probably correct then. I would say constipation with a swim bladder issue. It makes them have a hard time breathing somtimes. It can be helpful to lower the water level so he doesn't have to struggle so hard to get to the surface for air.
