Sick Beta Fish?

We have had our Beta for @ 1 year.  I was doing fine until about 2 days ago.  It lays at the bottom most of the time but gets spurts of energy and swims frantically to the top and around the bowl then falls to the bottom again.  What is wrong with our fish?

Amy,                                                         I hope you haven't lost your baby. He probably has a swim bladder infection. Treat the tank with tetracycline. That should fix him up. If you find he has swelling in the abdomen we will go from there , but this sounds very normal it happens.....Good Luck , Tina
