beta fish sucking air

Question
We have a beta fish, owned it for almost 2 years, that is living in a large glass vase, no vegetation. This morning I changed the water per usual, added salt, ick away and fungus tablet - and made sure the filtered water was room temp. The beta stayed at the top as if he was sucking air all day. So I thought I made a mistake in the proportions of the additions, and redid it, and he is still sucking air... what I am doing wrong??
My husband usually cares for the fish, however he is currently in Afghanistan and I really would like to keep the fish alive for him until he comes home.. can you please help???
Christina

Answer
Hi Christina;

Bettas normally spend a lot ot time at the top but he should only be getting an air bubble from the top occasionally, not constantly for every breath of his gill movement. It may be from tap water chemicals.  If you don't have a regular water conditioner to remove chlorine and help with stress, he needs that. Use a dose as soon as you can.

It is best not to just automatically use fungus and ick medicine in your betta's tank. They should only be used if your fish is actually sick with something. Using them all the time causes the diseases to become immune to them. Basically, you are creating a "boot camp" for harmful organisms. It makes them tougher. If there comes a time that your fish is sick and actually needs treatment, it may not be effective. The salt is okay to use all the time though. It offers help with stress, electrolytes and does help prevent diseases to a certain extent.

If your husband is in military service in Afghanistan, I am very grateful to your family and especially your husband for sacrificing time together in order to protect my American family. Thank You all VERY much...
