Question

My New Babies
Hello again!

My mommy molly finally gave birth to the babies either some time early this morning or late last night. When I got into work, We found 10 of them in the tank. one was already dead sadly and one other we couldn't get to before my platy got to it, but we where able to save 8 of them. From what I heard, that's a pretty small number to find, do you think that the other babies got eaten before I get in today? Also my large female platy and other female molly are pregnant as well. After they have the babies (and we save as many as we can) would it be ok to put them in the same breeding net as my 8 baby Mollies I have? Also, 7 out of the 8 are a pretty good size and seem to be hanging out together in the breeding net, already eating and chasing each other around, but the 8th one is about half the size of the other 7, and is always hiding in the little plant that I put in the breeder net. Is this normal for runts? And how likely is it that I will end up losing some babies? I really want them all to live! Also, as for the other mommies to be, I have a LOT of plants all on one side of the tank (where I found the babies this morning) before the babies where born, the other fish didn't go into all those plants, but this morning, they where trying to get in there like crazy. Should I add more plants to make it even harder for the big fish to get in there to protect the babies more, or will it not make much of a difference? Thank you so much for all your help! I have more images of the babies and the soon to be mommies, I just didn't know how to attach them. If you would like to see them, please let me know!

Answer
Hi Stephanie

When it comes to baby fish, only the strong survive. You will likely lose some. You want to place them in the breeder net as soon as you notice them in the tank. As far as the floating plants go, the bushier the better. The larger fish will try, but if they are bushy enough, they likely would not be able to get to them. Placing all of the babies in the same breeder net would be fine, they may chase and play, but would not harm one another.

Hope this helps, good luck!
