floating bits in tank

Question
hi there, i'm new to keeping fish and recently bought a tank from a friend. when i bought it my friend told me to fill it with water and turn it on straight away in order to keep the bacteria alive so i wouldn't have problems later down the line. i did this everything is running the filter, heater and light. however there's lots of little bits floating around the tank what i think is fish poo. but the tank has been running now for 5 days and it doesn't look any different from when i first turned it on. i've looked at the filter and it seems to be running fine. can you help me with this problem? (don't worry theres no fish in the tank, till i can sort this problem) thanks.

Answer
Hi Michael,
Can you describe to me the kind of filter that you have (there are many, many kinds)?  For example, there are filters that are electric, or air-driven.  Some are in the tank, some are on the tank, some are connected to the tank by hoses. What does yours look like?
Or, you can send a photo to my email address below -- that might be best.
