Societ Finch Chicks

Question
I have a society finch couple that just became parents last night to 2-3 chicks (I can't tell yet, just heard them chirping this morning).  They have laid many eggs before, but these are the first that have hatched.  I've tried researching the internet, but have gotten so much mixed information!  They are currently on a diet of mixed seed/vitamn supplement finch food, recieve dried mixed greens, millet, cuttle bone, and water.  Is there any supplement I should be using?  Do I need to be feeding them egg white/shell for the calcium?  Currently we use hay for for the bottom of the cage, which they have stuffed in their nest (a modified hamster ball at the top corner of their cage).  Is there a safer way I should modify the cage for the chicks?  If you could even direct me to a book/ website/ anything, I would appreciate it!

Answer
It sounds like you've got everything that they could ever need. You can feed them egg shell if you want but I use a calcium supplement that is added to the water a couple times a week (the website provided sells it). I would consider taking out the seeds so they don't feed it to the babies (newborn babies can't digest seed and it will either get stuck in their crop or intestines and kill the baby). Not all parents feed this to their babies but it is something to think about. I would start introducing the parents to Eggfood mix (http://www.finchroom.com/articles/soft_food.html - I live in Canada so I don't know if sukses or cede is available where you are). It's very high in nutrients and once birds get a taste for it, they will wait for you to put it in their cage (it's also fattening so make sure the birds are able to fly off that fat).
Unfortunately, I find when it comes to finches and their babies, the only way to learn anything is trial and error. There's lots of "information" out there but as you've discovered, it often contradicts.
