Tame budgie suddenly attacking

Question
Hello,
I have had by budgie for 7 months now so im guessing hes about 10 months old. He has NEVER bitten before and is one of the tamest budgies ive ever seen. His cage is permanently open so he can come and go as he pleases and he wants to be with me allll the time.
However, the other day he started this 'rubbing' on my hand that i prseume is trying to mate. Then i caught him trying to get on the back of my lovebird. Ever since then hes been biting me alot, which hes never ever done before. He will fly up to me, wait for me to put out my hand, and then bite be several times. If i keep my hand still he will go into 'attacking mode' and bite me really hard. He even sat watching me on the top of the computer when i was online...he was singing and acting normal and then suddenly he just flew for my face and bit me hard on the lip.
He is usually the most gentle of birds and loves to be with me all the time. After the last time he bit me i managed to catch him (he knew he had been bad as he acted like it was a game and was flying away from me) and put him in his cage with the door shut and a sheet on top. I have never done this before and he doesnt sleep with a sheet on his cage so im am quite unsure about how he will react to this.
Am i doing the right thing? Do u think that this sudden (past week!) change is hormonal? And if so..how do u control it? Should i separate him from my lovebird?
Any advice would be great, i want my nice little Timmy back! Thanks

Answer
hello daisy! looks like your little budgie is growing up! When budgies reach a certain age (around 1 year) could be younger though, they go through many changes. Biting is normal for a growing budgie. I assume that your bird is a he and males can be very territorial and agressive during breeding season. Your bird probably sees you as his mate and he will bite because he wants to assert his dominace. Birds will also bite their mate to drive them away from a threat or they could be jealous that you are paying more attention to an object than them. When it gets to the point where he is agressive and starts to mate with various things (laughs) My male budgie is a total pervert! he wants to mate all the time and will try to make love to anything! Heres what you can do to help control this hormonal outbrake. Make sure your budgie is getting 12-14 hours of sleep a day. The decrease of daylight will help settle down his hormones. Your lovebird can stay but dont let your loveird out as the same time as Timmy. If Timmy is a free roam bird then he may be calling all the area around him "his territory". Try keeping him in his cage for a couple hours at a time. Dont let him fly wheneverand where ever. Set up special times that he can come out of his cage.
To reduce the chances of getting bitten watch for warning signs, like dililating of the pupils and raised feathers. This wont have to last forever because breeding season only lasts a few months. Timmy wont be like this forever so dont worry. Make sure he gets lots of sleep, reduce his amount of flying free and his hormones should slowly decrease. I wish you good luck with Timmy and soon he will become his old self after breeding season.
